Karl Drais, also formally known by his aristocratic title Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Christian Ludwig, Freiherr Drais von Sauerbronn, was born in Germany in 1785, and
is credited with inventing the meat grinder during the 19th century. Drais was a life long inventor and, in addition to the meat grinder, is acknowledged with also developing the precursor to today’s two wheel bicycle,
an early typewriter with keyboard and a stenotype machine.
Over the years, the meat grinder’s basic operation and design has changed very little. The internal workings of the meat grinder and the fundamental operating principles have stayed the same over the years: forcing meat through sharpened blades. Today’s home meat grinders can be purchased with an old fashioned hand crank or with an electric motor. However, the goal of the meat grinder is the same: using manual or electric power to turn a horizontal screw conveyor, forcing the meat through a series of sharp blades and then pushing it out various sized plates.
