I bought this to cut down on my meat budget. I can buy roasts that are on sale and grind them into ground beef and spend less than is I bought already ground beef. This grinds the meat nicely. The clamp the holds it on the table slip sometimes (which is why I gave it 4 stars), but permanently fixing it to a block of wood solves this. Or just tighten it every so ofter. I will warn first time buyers, meat grinding is a slow process. Occasionally you will have to take the blade off and clean it as gristl

My motivation for getting this item was an article about what legally passes for pre-ground beef in the US. I thought I already knew the essential facts, but the article sickened me.
I couldn't face the idea of getting and storing yet one more electric appliance, so I selected this one. I wasn't put off by the reviews that mention industrial oil residue: I just parked it in the dishwasher for a couple of cycles before using. Some reviews of other grinders complain that the cutting wheels and bl

Haven't made any pasta yet, but for grinding meat it works great. It's also easy to clean and store in a plastic bag etc.

Bought this item based on the large number of positive reviews here on Amazon. Had no intention of using it for pasta, just meat.
FIRST - no one mentions that the handle is longer than the unit is tall. So where and how it sticks to what surface is immaterial if none of these surfaces is an edge. My formica counter top has a raised lip, so it didn't work on the edge as I needed.
Overcame that problem, and embarked on my first project, grinding some top round for making meat loaf

Wanting a home meat grinder, I bought this particular model because (a) I am CHEAP, and (b) I didn't want another version of the old pig-iron hand-cranked grinder my family used to have (weighed a ton, rusted if you so much as breathed on it, imparted an unpleasant pig-iron flavor to everything that went through it).
I should have known that I was going to be likewise unsatisfied with an all-plastic grinder, but thought I'd give this a whirl. And when I tried it out, for the first few minutes, it wasn't that bad. I had a one-pound chunk of beef that I'd slung in the freezer for an hour (slightly frozen meat is much easier to grind); I cut it into small strips as directed by the instructions; I tried securing the grinder to several surfaces (didn't work at all on the wooden chopping block, but held on pretty well to formica); and I had reasonable success with the first half-pound or so of the meat, producing a nice evenly-ground result.
Alas, after that the fat and tendons began clogging up the mechanism, and finally I had to take the whole thing apart and spend a revolting interlude picking clotted clumps of animal sinew out of the holes in the plate.
So I'll be returning this, and looking for a better alternative. Giving it two stars despite my disgruntlement, because it might not be bad for someone only grinding meat that had been carefully pre-trimmed, and for all I know it might be fine for pasta-making.

Works OK generally - but slip off counter sometimes. Have to screw down VERY tight to prevent this.

Got the grinder recently. It is much rougher compared to the picture (and the one we had many years ago), but (so far) does do job pretty well.
For the price, is a good deal.

WOW! Defect after defect after defect! I bought this after completely disregarding all the negative reviews. I'm in the restaurant business and know that often times people misuse kitchen tools then mistake them for faulty products. Now, having written that, I AM A FOOL! I read all I could about grinding and sausage making for 2 days before pulling this out of the box. Excited to get started, I washed it then tried to assemble it. 1st problem- the grind plate did not fit on the shaft. The shaft was slightly

The assembly instructions are not all that clear. It is difficult to attach to a counter. I attached it to a stool with better results but put a small thin cutting board between the wood and grinder to protect the wooden stool. It did the job but was a lot more work than I remember my mother's grinder was to use.

Universal Housewares 301A Gourmet Meat Chopper
If no stars was an option for rating, that would have been my choice for this review. This product is very poorly designed and made. While it is not Amazon's fault, Universal should be ashamed of themselves for making something so cheap. I owned an "antique" Universal grinder that was wonderful, but lost it in a move so I wanted a new one. I looked for the Universal brand, thinking I would get the same quality that I was used to. What a mistake that
